SPX Transformer Solutions, Inc. (formerly Waukesha Electric Systems, Inc), is one of the largest U.S. manufacturers of power transformers and a valued supplier of complete transformer service solutions, components and replacement parts as well as a variety of substation-applicable training classes for all skill levels including a large number of comprehensive LTC maintenance courses. We employ approximately 1,000 people throughout the United States and operate manufacturing facilities at our headquarters location in Waukesha, WI as well as Goldsboro, NC and Dallas, TX.


Waukesha® Transformers

SPX Transformer Solutions designs, manufactures and tests a complete line of medium power self-cooled transformers rated from 2 to 100 MVA with primary voltages through 345 kV. Our large power product line includes transformers that are top rated to 1200 MVA, 345 kV.

Our modern transformer manufacturing operations utilize sophisticated computer-controlled equipment and test systems, complemented by a well-trained, experienced work force to produce high quality power transformers that meet stringent customer demands. SPX Transformer Solutions also has one of the shortest production cycles in the industry, which allows the SPX Waukesha team to respond quickly to customer delivery and installation requirements.

  • Waukesha, Wisconsin Manufacturing Facility — 421,000 sq ft:
    To meet growing industry needs, a $70 million expansion was recently completed that enables this facility to manufacture units with a power rating over 1000 MVA. An additional 35,000 sq. ft. facility in Waukesha, WI is dedicated to manufacturing and training where we focus on maintaining the company’s reputation for quality and technology leadership.
  • Goldsboro, North Carolina Manufacturing Facility — 171,500 sq ft:
    SPX Transformer Solutions’ Goldsboro transformer manufacturing plant contains state-of-the-art manufacturing and computerized scheduling systems that enable production of medium power transformers that meet the highest industry standards. The engineering team, using 3-D computer-aided design tools, develops innovative designs that meet changing utility and industrial product needs.

Waukesha® Service

SPX Transformer Solutions can provide complete transformer service solutions for almost any manufacturer's units including installation, relocation, testing and engineering assessments; oil processing, dryouts and retrofills; corrective and preventative maintenance; load tap changer field retrofits and repairs. With a growing number of mobile vacuum oil purification units, several pieces of auxiliary equipment and semi tractor/crane combination vehicles, SPX Waukesha maintains one of the largest fleets of specialized transformer service equipment in the United States. This large, modern equipment base along with our vast number of skilled personnel located strategically across the country, allow us greater flexibility, faster response times, reduced installation hours and lower costs while helping us provide efficient, safe and high quality service to our customers.


Waukesha® Components and Training

HVSSPX Transformer Solutions’ components division operates a 33,000 square foot manufacturing, testing and training facility in Dallas, Texas as a leading manufacturer and supplier of components for most major current and obsolete load tap changer (LTC) and oil circuit breaker brands as well as being the original manufacturer of a line of Transformer Health Products®. Additionally, we offer a variety of LTC services including maintenance training, failure analysis reporting and complete overhauls at this location. By demonstrating a continued commitment to utilizing new materials and technologies to fuel the development of new products and solutions, SPX Waukesha has also built a strong reputation as an industry leader in legacy unit support and design enhancement.

Our Training division, also headquartered in the Dallas facility, provides comprehensive training solutions for today's engineering and technical field personnel. By taking a hands-on approach, our customers experience technical procedures, practices and problem-solving techniques on the actual equipment they will later encounter in the field. We strive to keep a correct balance between classroom studies and hands-on interactive activities, to understand the why as well as the how, to build confidence and expertise in the students that are entrusted to us.

Technology Leadership

For over 40 years, SPX Transformer Solutions has invested in research, technology and new product design, remaining focused on improving industry standards and leading innovations to serve the evolving needs of the power delivery industry. SPX Waukesha supports and participates in many industry groups and organizations including IEEE, CIGRE, AEIC, EPRI, Doble, Weidmann, NRECA, NWPPA, RMEL and IEC to help set and revise standards, educate when asked and keep our fingers on the pulse of our customers' needs. We also host our own Regional Technical Seminars throughout the year, allowing customers and channel partners to set the agenda from a list of current topics and offer a Transformer Concepts and Applications seminar bi-annually for those looking to further enhance their product knowledge in a non-stressful, non-commercial environment.

SPX Waukesha employs a large number of industry experts to teach the aforementioned classes and help our customers determine what needs to happen to keep power flowing smoothly through their transformers. From specification review to our extensive database of existing engineered transformer designs and reverse-engineering capabilities, all the way through to installation and comprehensive maintenance on virtually any manufacturer's brand, SPX Waukesha strives to be the "go to" technical resource for everything related to power transformers.

 

IEEE/PES Transformers Committee

SPX Waukesha actively participates in the IEEE/PES Transformers Committee, an industry group with the following scope:

  • Treatment of all matters in which the dominant factors are the application, design, construction, testing and operation of transformers, reactors and other similar equipment. Included is treatment of the following:

    • Transmission and Distribution Transformers
    • Voltage Regulators (step and induction regulators)
    • Reactors and Grounding Transformers
    • HVDC Converter Transformers and Smoothing Reactors
    • Power Semiconductor Rectifier Transformers
    • Instrument Transformers (voltage and current transformers)
    • Insulation and Dielectric Issues Relating to Transformers
    • Outdoor Apparatus Bushings
    • Insulating Fluids
    • Underground Transformers and Network Protectors
    • Phase Angle Regulating Transformers

  • Sponsorship and development (either alone or jointly with other technical committees and/or organizations) of standards, recommended practices, guidelines and policies as well as preparation of position papers and/or documents, technical conferences and/or sessions on matters related to items above.

  • Liaison and cooperation with other technical committees, societies, groups and associations concerned with various aspects of items above.
