Load Tap Changer Maintenance

Help Ensure Proper Transformer Operation With Professional LTC Maintenance

Waukesha Service has the ability and expertise to service most Load Tap Changers in use in the United States today. We can perform a condition assessment of your LTCs to advise what is wrong or what can be done to increase reliability and extend the life of this important asset. Our components division in Dallas, TX, can provide a complete parts kit so when we service an LTC, we have the correct parts at the jobsite to promptly repair the unit rather than waiting for parts to arrive to complete the job. This process can save time and money! Waukesha Service also has the necessary equipment and manpower to remove the oil to perform an in-tank LTC inspection and either clean or, more typically, replace the LTC oil.

To keep your LTC operating properly, Waukesha Service can make necessary repairs or adjustments:

  • Replace old or worn gaskets
  • Fix leaks
  • Replace contacts, check alignment and timing
  • Provide and replace phase moldings and tap heads
  • Replace the complete internal operating mechanisms on some models of tap changers
  • Check the regulating relays for proper operation

Proper LTC oil maintenance can reduce arcing times and extend contact life. To keep your LTC oil clean and dry, Waukesha can provide and install maintenance-saving devices such as Oil Filtration Systems and ARDBs (Auto-Recharging Dehydrating Breathers).

Comprehensive LTC maintenance training is available through Waukesha Components. Classes are scheduled regionally throughout the year for several of the most common models of tap changers in operation today. Experienced instructors also offer LTC training at our High Intensity Training facility in Dallas, TX. Training can also be scheduled at your facility if that's most convenient and cost-effective for you. For more information on these training classes, click here to visit our Components training page.

LTC Upgrades

Waukesha® Service is available to properly install and maintain almost any LTC upgrades you choose.  SPX Waukesha Service Project Managers and Field Service Technicians are experienced in handling your project, turnkey. Upgrading your aging Load Tap Changer is a consideration if you’re looking to improve reliability and availability while reducing maintenance time and costs. Regardless of the LTC brand you have, product improvements, enhancements and LTC maintenance recommendations may be available that can extend the life of this critical power system asset:

  • Improved LTC components and accessories are available from Waukesha ’s components division, High Voltage Supply, including replacement contacts manufactured with our proprietary ELR® (Extra Low Resistance) material that reduces the probability of filming and coking.

  • Retrofit LTC Oil Filtration Systems are available to keep your LTC oil clean. Depending on your needs, you can choose from a standard Retrofit Unit (Patent No. 6,062,821), our Retrofit-Plus Oil Filtration System (Patent Pending) or our 2nd generation compact system with unique high efficiency filter design and tilt-out easy filter change system. Arcing in oil generates carbon which holds moisture and increases arcing time, resulting in reduced contact life and increased maintenance costs. Keeping the oil clean of carbon with an on-line oil filtration system has helped many utilities significantly extend LTC contact life and the time between maintenance cycles.

  • Our patented ARDB (Auto Recharging Dehydrating Breather) is another component to consider (Patent No. 5,902,381) to improve reliability and lower maintenance costs on your LTCs. Since the ARDB keeps silica gel in the breather dry automatically using its own heater, your crews no longer need to replace saturated silica gel in the field. Keeping the LTC oil dry increases the dielectric withstand capabilities of the oil. High moisture content in the oil can also accelerate the formation of filming and coking, so keeping the oil dry will help improve reliability and reduce maintenance costs

  • Complete Load Tap Changer Upgrades are also available from High Voltage Supply. Significant improvements have been made in certain models of LTCs. For example, we have reverse-engineered and improved the internal components of the GE LRT200 LTC, and the complete new unit can be easily replaced in the field. You can either send us your old GE LRT200 to refurbish, or we can send you a new LRT200-2 so you can reduce the time to make the change-out in the field, and then send us your old unit later. Contact High Voltage Supply by phone at 800-338-5526 to discuss your needs or by e-mail at hvsinfo@waukesha.spx.com.

  • New and improved switches and components for a variety of older and current model LTCs are also manufactured by High Voltage Supply. The components have been redesigned to solve many of the factors that have caused problems in these devices, such as the new UTT/UTT-A cam switch assembly (shown at right).

  • LTC Training for your team may also be appropriate to properly maintain your equipment. Experienced instructors at our High Intensity Training facility in Dallas, TX offer classes throughout the year on several LTC models. Training can also be scheduled at your facility if that's most convenient and cost-effective for you. Click here for a current LTC training schedule and links to more information.

Retrofit with Type RMV-II

Do you have older transformers with reactive bridging LTCs that are way past their prime? Is your equipment unreliable and giving you a “big time” maintenance headache?

Waukesha® Service is the team to call! We can replace that old reactive-bridging tap changer with a new reactive-bridging, vacuum-arcing style LTC to help improve transformer reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the life of your assets. Your Waukesha® Service project engineer and field service technicians can handle the project, turnkey, including

  • Draining the oil from your transformer and LTC
  • Disconnecting and cutting the old LTC away
  • Modifying the preventive auto (if necessary)
  • Fabricating a transition cubical
  • Supplying a new Reinhausen Type RMV-II Load Tap Changer
  • Mounting the RMV-II onto your transformer

ServiceOur experienced crews will also modify the control wiring as necessary and can upgrade to a new regulating relay so that the new LTC will function as expected.

Bare metal will be primed and painted so the job looks like new, and following vacuum filling, the transformer and LTC will be retested to check for proper operation.

Comprehensive LTC maintenance training is available through Waukesha® Components. Experienced instructors at our High Intensity Training facility in Dallas, TX offer classes throughout the year, including regional classes on a variety of LTCs, including the RMV-II. Training can also be scheduled at your facility if that's most convenient and cost-effective for you. Click here for a current LTC training schedule and links to more information.
