In November, SPX Transformer Solutions’ Goldsboro employees reached a safety milestone by working one million hours without a lost-time incident. To celebrate this outstanding achievement, management distributed long-sleeved commemorative t-shirts to all employees and will be adding signage throughout the facility lauding the accomplishment.
Employee involvement is a key component of the Goldsboro safety program, which involves all employees working cooperatively and proactively to prevent injuries and illnesses through a system focused on hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis, training, management commitment and teamwork. Each month, every employee contributes at least one Safety Observation and/or “Good Catch” card. This process helps identify potential issues before they become larger problems and also serves as a reinforcement of the plant’s safety motto: See Something, Say Something & Do Something. According to Craig Fulcher, EH&S manager, “We are all responsible for our own safety and for speaking up and taking action whenever we see the potential for an injury to occur.”
In addition to individual accountability, the Goldsboro team sustains its excellent safety results by working in groups to achieve specific, common goals. The facility’s Safety Committee and Job Hazard Assessment Teams identify and work to resolve safety issues with cross-functional support across the organization. The Medical Emergency Response Team, made up of employees trained in first aid, CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) operation, confined space rescue and spill response, helps raise awareness of health and safety issues throughout the plant. Additionally, supervisors are trained on understanding OSHA rules and regulations as well as essential safety principles, practices and management techniques to help them understand the importance of the programs in which their direct reports participate. “Passing the milestone of one million hours without a lost-time incident helps validate the effectiveness of the excellent teamwork and safety management program at SPX Transformer Solutions,” says Fulcher.
